Quigo Challenges Google and Yahoo in Online Advertising

Posted by Kym on Tuesday, February 27
Category: internet news, google

By now most people know about Google Adwords, and to a lesser extent Yahoo’s own Contextual Ad service they purchased off Overture.

The problem at the moment is many niches are beginning to show major saturation in contextual advertising. While this is great for the online advertising economy in general, lack of competition is causing price hikes, pushing many of the smaller operators out of the game.

Quigo offers its advertisers the ability to choose which sites their ads are displayed on.

Not all websites are run equally and a top tier site with hundreds of thousands of visitors might be more appropriate than a small blog website depending on the product or service offered.

The key though is choice, which is very important when you want to fine tune your results even more than Google and Yahoo allow, particularly when dealing with gargantuan budgets from the big players.

BitTorrent Entertainment Network to be unveiled tomorrow

Posted by Matthew on Monday, February 26

Hollywood studios are going into business with one of their biggest tormentors: the peer-to-peer pioneer BitTorrent.

Wow, everyone beef up your ISP account! Strap a wireless xbox 360 to your big screen and maybe even get the PSP for the bedroom! Pay,download, play is here to stay!

I wonder what the timeline is for the death of the video store as we know it, 5yrs?.. 10?

Why the web can look wonky on a Mac

Posted by Kym on Thursday, February 15
Category: macs

I read a great article this morning explaining an issue with the way colours can display on Macs while surfing the web. Heres the example from the article.
mac vs pc gamma

The image on the right is infact closer to: #EC9546;

If you are on a Mac with Safari take a look for yourself.

Apparently the issue all stems from the fact that Macs use a gamma setting of 1.8 where as PCs use 2.2.
However the Mac doesn’t simply brighten up everything, or there wouldn’t be a problem. One could simply counter this with the monitor or system gamma settings.

The problem is that OSX will infact render different parts of a web page with different gamma settings.
HTML, CSS and other rendered graphics will follow one gamma setting, while images and in particular photos with embedded colour profiles, will render differently.

Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us

Switch mental gears for a minute and check out this interesting visual essay on the evolution of text/hypertext. Great example of how motion graphics can be used by academia to make compelling arguments that PowerPoint or a journal article cannot easily convey.

An interesting look back at the history of the web, and the first part of the information revolution, the simple hyperlink.

Google takes on Microsofts Office Suite

Posted by Kym on Thursday, February 8
Category: google

I read an article today talking about Google finally offering a version of their many office productivity tools as a paid service to businesses.

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_07/b4021070.htm

People have been speculating about this sort of stuff for a while now, and since most of us have experienced web applications ourselves we have no doubt this is the direct a lot of productivity tools will go.

Microsoft has also produced a similar product called Office Live.

I think all of these types of products are going to move to online subscription based models in the near future; and this could finally lead to the death of upgrade software and licensing.

One thing Microsoft can certainly do with is some healthy competition on the Office front. I know most people find that their software is over complicated and bulky.

More Retired People Surfing Over Gardening

Posted by Kym on Thursday, February 8
Category: internet news

An eye-opening study that contradicts so many pre-conceptions that the older generation isn’t net savvy. E-consultancy refers to the AXA report which found that retired people are browsing the Internet rather then the traditional pastimes of gardening and do-it-yourself activities. Humorously referred to as “silver surfers”, these users were studied in 11 countries, with results showing that users in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada using the Internet more than six hours a week. 41% of pensioners listed browsing as their favorite pastime, while four in ten are regular e-shoppers.

Google Maps Australia

Posted by Kym on Wednesday, February 7
Category: internet news

Google Maps has been updated with mapping data for Australia and New Zealand cities. A move that is likely to continue to spur a frenzy of mapping mash-up activity.

While the Google Earth application has captured the imagination of the world with its 3D satellite images, Google Maps offers businesses a means of overlaying their own data or statistics over detailed street maps on their web site.

An obvious application is in real estate where available properties can be plotted onto a map for the benefit of house hunters.

A “mash-up” typically mixes different types of data such as geographic data overlayed on an interactive map. In countries where Google street map data is available, more mash-ups have sprung up each day and range from the quirky to the very practical.
